Hello there!

I'm Florian Fechner, programmer, sound designer and music composer for video games.
Welcome to my portfolio!

About me

I'm a hobby programmer and long time musician based in Leverkusen, Germany. My dayjob as R&D assistant involves some degree of programming, but not game related. My game dev experience boils down to student- and personal projects.

I have had a big passion for gaming ever since I got my first SNES at the age of just 2 years old. My first dream job at age 6 was to be a game tester. I started learning about game dev and playing around with the RPGMaker 2000 when I was 10. My career path took me down a different road, but I never stopped being passionate about game dev. About 2 years ago, I decided to deepen my knowledge and understanding by learning to use the Unity3D engine. I've been working on numerous projects, some of which you can read more about on this website. I'm a fan of the mechanics driven game design approach and to no surprise love implementing mechanics and prototyping games. I try to apply test driven development and the SOLID-Principles whenever I can.
My second Passion next to game dev is music. I learned playing the guitar at the age of 10 and later self-taught myself playing piano. I love creating music in all forms, be it composing, arranging or producing. As a diehard fan of video games, I developed a passion for video game music and soundtracks, and I love creating fitting and ambient music and sounds to any given scene.

In my spare time, I try to get as many hours into our projects as I can. When I'm not programming, I'm either jamming with friends, composing in my home studio, playing various games or jogging in the local neighborhood.

Projects

Escape from Purrrgatory

The first larger project I worked on was Escape from Purrrgatory, a Cologne Game Lab-BA5 self initiated project lead by Elena Igumnova from BA2018 together with Anastasiia Tataurova from the same semester and Daniil Khokhonov from masters. I fulfilled the role of sounddesigner and second programmer. During development, I learned working alongside a team and conform with deadlines. Learn more about my role in Escape from Purrrgatory.

Untitled Bachelor Project

Currently, I'm assisting as programmer on Elena's Bachelor Thesis Project, this time as the only programmer. During the workflow, I try to broaden my skills as a programmer by learning and implementing various patterns as well as following the SOLID-Principles to the best of my ability. Find out more in-depth insights about my learning process.

Snake Snacks

Snake Snacks is a mini project currently in prototype stage. It is heavily inspired by the classic mobile game "Snake", with the twist that the player places the snake's food instead of controlling the snake itself. The snake will then find the shortest path by itself. It is a fun little project to learn about the basics of tilebased pathfinding. Learn more about Snake Snacks.

Sound Design and Composing

Aside from programming, my biggest passion is music and sound. Therefore I love composing and also designing sounds for videogames. In addition to making the sound and music for Escape from Purrrgatory, I did various ambience and composing exercises as well as the sound design for an infinite jump mobile game. Listen to some examples of my work in sound.
